<Masatoshi Koshiba> helped turn underground <neutrino> detectors into astronomical instruments. The Kamiokande II report of the 1987 <supernova> burst described eleven electron-like events over about thirteen <seconds>. These rare interactions supplied information about the collapsing star through weakly interacting particles rather than only its escaping <light>. The observation joined the timing and <energy> measurements of particle detection with a transient event far outside the solar system.<Observation of a Neutrino Burst from the Supernova SN1987A by K.
