Massless inextensible string (source code)

= Massless inextensible string

= Ideal string
{synonym}

= Light inextensible string
{synonym}

An ideal string of negligible <mass> and fixed length, transmitting <tension> when taut. In an ideal guide with no <friction>, the <tension> magnitude is the same on both sides: otherwise the <force> balance on an arbitrarily short massless segment would fail. Its fixed length gives a <mechanical constraint> relating the endpoint <velocities>. The two endpoint <tension> <powers> sum to zero when the guide is stationary; the string can transfer <energy> between connected particles without adding net <energy>.
