The <matrix ring> consists of all $n\times n$ <matrices> over a <ring> $R$, using entrywise <addition> and <matrix multiplication>. Its <identity element> is the <identity matrix>. Even when $R$ is a <commutative ring>, this <ring> need not have <commutative> <multiplication>.
