A microemulsion is a thermodynamically stable mixture of immiscible fluids and surfactant with structure on a mesoscopic length scale. In a gradient theory, a negative square-gradient coefficient stabilized by a positive fourth-gradient term favors fluctuations at nonzero wavevector.
