The specimen-facing <optical lens> assembly of an <optical microscope>. A <microscope objective> collects <light> from the specimen and sets the object-side <numerical aperture>. In a <finite-conjugate microscope> it forms the <intermediate microscope image> directly; in an <infinity-corrected microscope> a <tube lens> completes that <image formation>. Its label alone does not calibrate a specimen <length>.
