Modulational instability
= Modulational instability
{wiki}
Modulational instability is growth of long-wavelength <perturbations> of a uniform or periodic wave due to coupling between its modulation and nonlinear dynamics. In the <focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation>, the amplitude and phase perturbations can have imaginary modulation frequencies even though the unperturbed wave is an exact solution.
