A standard mollifier is a nonnegative <test function> $\rho$ with integral one. The rescaling $\rho_\varepsilon(x)=\varepsilon^{-n}\rho(x/\varepsilon)$ forms an approximation to the identity, and $u*\rho_\varepsilon$ is smooth wherever the convolution stays inside the domain.
