A <monolayer> is a single layer of <chemical atoms> or <molecules>. In the <Langmuir adsorption model>, a complete <monolayer> occupies every <adsorption site>; partial <surface coverage> leaves vacancies within that first layer. One layer need not mean one <molecule> per surface <chemical atom>.
