Conversion of a primary or secondary nitro-derived <nitronate> into a <carbonyl> compound by suitable hydrolytic conditions. The nitro-bearing <carbon> becomes an aldehyde <carbon> for a primary nitroalkane or a <ketone> <carbon> for a secondary one.
