The characteristic of a <meromorphic function> is the sum of its <Nevanlinna proximity function> and <Nevanlinna integrated counting function>. It treats large values and actual poles together. Replacing $f$ by $f-a$ changes the characteristic by at most $\log(1+|a|)$.
