Nital

A nitric-acid/alcohol metallographic etchant. In pearlitic steel it can preferentially remove <ferrite>, leaving <cementite> standing higher. In an <atomic force microscopy> height image, darker then means lower surface height, not an optical reflectivity or atomic-number contrast.
