The null energy condition requires $T_{\mu\nu}k^\mu k^\nu\geq0$ for every null vector $k$. Through the Einstein field equations this is equivalent to $R_{\mu\nu}k^\mu k^\nu\geq0$ when the cosmological term is absent.
