An optical scattering force transfers <momentum> from <light> to a particle through <scattering of light>. In a usual single-beam <optical trap>, its axial contribution pushes along beam propagation; the <optical gradient force> must balance it for axial confinement. This balance can place the stable <equilibrium> away from the beam focus.
