A <symmetric matrix> has $A^T=A$, without conjugation. One invertible example with nonreal off-diagonal entries is
$$
\boxed{A=\begin{pmatrix}1&i\\i&2\end{pmatrix},\qquad\det A=3.}
$$
It is symmetric but not <Hermitian>, illustrating the importance of the distinction over $\mathbb C$.
