= Solution

The adjoint reverses products, so for the two <Hermitian operators>
$$
(\alpha\beta)^*=\beta^*\alpha^*=\beta\alpha.
$$
Thus \b[$\alpha\beta$ is Hermitian if and only if $\alpha\beta=\beta\alpha$]. No positivity hypothesis is needed for this equivalence.
