Eigenvectors belonging to distinct <eigenvalues> are <linear independence>[linearly independent]. Under the hypothesis they therefore form a basis $v_1,\ldots,v_n$. For every $j$,
$$
\chi_A(A)v_j=\chi_A(\lambda_j)v_j=0
$$
because $\chi_A(\lambda_j)=0$. A linear map that vanishes on a basis is zero, hence
$$
\boxed{\chi_A(A)=0}.
$$
This proves the <Cayley-Hamilton theorem> in the distinct-eigenvalue case.
