The initial specific energy is
$$
\mathcal E=\frac12u^2-\frac{2mk}{a}.
$$
Escape to infinity is possible exactly when $\mathcal E\geq0$. Thus the <escape velocity> criterion is
$$
\boxed{|u|\geq2\sqrt{\frac{mk}{a}}}.
$$
Equality corresponds to marginal escape.
