= Solution

Part i gives $\|D\|\leq B$. Conversely, choose indices $j_k$ with $|d_{j_k}|\to B$. Since $\|e_{j_k}\|_2=1$,
$$
\|D\|\geq\|De_{j_k}\|_2=|d_{j_k}|.
$$
Taking the <limit> proves $\boxed{\|D\|=B}$, whether or not the <supremum> is attained.
