Changing variables gives
$$
\frac1h\int_a^x(f(t+h)-f(t))dt
=\frac1h\left(\int_x^{x+h}f(s)ds-\int_a^{a+h}f(s)ds\right).
$$
The average of a <continuous function> over $[y,y+h]$ tends to $f(y)$ as $h\to0$. The two terms therefore tend to $f(x)$ and $f(a)$, proving the stated <limit>.
