Write the free surface as the zero set
$$
S(x,y,z,t)=z-\eta(x,y,t)=0.
$$
Because this is a material surface, the <kinematic boundary condition> is $DS/Dt=0$. Thus, on $z=\eta$,
$$
0=S_t+uS_x+vS_y+wS_z
=-\eta_t-u\eta_x-v\eta_y+w.
$$
Therefore
$$
\boxed{w=\eta_t+u\eta_x+v\eta_y
=\frac{D\eta}{Dt}}
$$
at the free surface. This is the <kinematic boundary condition for a free-surface graph>.
