= Solution

An <immersed submanifold> of $M$ is a manifold $N$ with an injective <immersion> $\iota:N\to M$. It is an <embedded submanifold> when $\iota$ is also a homeomorphism onto its image with the subspace topology, equivalently when it is a <smooth embedding>.
