For $r>0$, differentiate $r=\sqrt{x^2+y^2}$ while keeping the other coordinate fixed in the <Cartesian coordinate system>:
$$
\boxed{r_x=\frac xr=\cos\phi,\qquad r_y=\frac yr=\sin\phi.}
$$
The origin is excluded from this <polar coordinates> chart.
