Apply the multivariable <chain rule> to $f(x,y)=g(r(x,y),\phi(x,y))$. Using the coordinate <partial derivatives> above gives
$$
\boxed{f_x=g_r\cos\phi-\frac{g_\phi}{r}\sin\phi,\qquad
f_y=g_r\sin\phi+\frac{g_\phi}{r}\cos\phi.}
$$
Equivalently, $\partial_x=\cos\phi\,\partial_r-(\sin\phi/r)\partial_\phi$ and $\partial_y=\sin\phi\,\partial_r+(\cos\phi/r)\partial_\phi$. Their coefficients vary with position and must also be differentiated when applying them twice.
