The <epsilon-delta definition of continuity> says that $f$ is continuous at $a$ if
$$
\boxed{\text{for every }\varepsilon>0\text{ there exists }\delta>0\text{ such that }|x-a|<\delta\implies|f(x)-f(a)|<\varepsilon.}
$$
Here $a$ belongs to the domain of $f$, and the implication is required for every $x$ in that domain. The number $\delta$ may depend on $\varepsilon$ and $a$, but must work for all such $x$ simultaneously.
