= Solution

To distinguish the old and new coordinate descriptions, write $u(x,y)=U(\xi(x,y),\eta(x,y))$. Since $\xi_x=\eta_x=1$, the <multivariable chain rule> gives
$$
\boxed{u_x=U_\xi+U_\eta}.
$$
Equivalently, the <differential operator> is $\partial_x=\partial_\xi+\partial_\eta$.
