= Solution

The residual $x-P_nx$ is orthogonal to $P_nx\in U_n$. Thus the <Pythagorean theorem> gives $\|x\|^2=\|x-P_nx\|^2+\|P_nx\|^2$. Substitute part (ii) and rearrange:
$$
\boxed{\|x-P_nx\|^2=\|x\|^2-\sum_{k=1}^n|\langle x,e_k\rangle|^2.}
$$
Nonnegativity of the left-hand side also gives the finite form of <Bessel's inequality>.
