In a <metric space>,
$$
\boxed{x\in A'\iff\text{there exists a sequence }a_n\in A\setminus\{x\}\text{ with }a_n\to x.}
$$
The <sequence> may equivalently be required to have pairwise distinct terms. The metric <hypothesis> makes a countable <sequence> sufficient; arbitrary <topological spaces> need not have this sequential characterization.
