The <second supplementary law for quadratic reciprocity> is

\boxed{(2/p)=(-1)^{(p^2-1)/8}=\begin{cases}1,&p\equiv1,7\pmod8,\\-1,&p\equiv3,5\pmod8.\end{cases}}
$$
The exponent is an integer because every odd square is one modulo eight.
