For an <odd prime> $p$, the <Legendre symbol> is
$$
\boxed{\left(\frac ap\right)=\begin{cases}0,&p\mid a,\\1,&p\nmid a\text{ and }a\text{ is a square modulo }p,\\-1,&a\text{ is a nonsquare modulo }p.\end{cases}}
$$
It depends only on the <congruence class> of the <integer> $a$. The values $1$ and $-1$ distinguish a nonzero <quadratic residue> from a <quadratic nonresidue>; zero is a separate case.
