= Periodic solution of a scalar delay equation

Purely imaginary characteristic roots produce oscillatory solutions. In particular, $r\tau=-\pi/2$ gives $\lambda=\mathord\pm i\pi/(2\tau)$ and the real solution $\cos(\pi t/(2\tau))$.
