Recovering the phase information needed to reconstruct a signal from intensity or transform-magnitude measurements. Constraints on the signal or additional measurements are needed because magnitudes alone generally admit multiple solutions. <Frequency-resolved optical gating> supplies a nonlinear family of delayed spectra rather than only a single Fourier magnitude.
