A <polymer> is a large molecular chain or network built from many chemically linked repeating units. Statistical chain models idealize its microscopic structure by segment vectors and describe its conformation through distributions, correlations and scattering. A <freely jointed chain> fixes each segment length while allowing independent orientations; a <Gaussian chain> replaces the segment or coarse-grained displacement distribution by a <Gaussian distribution>. These ideal models neglect excluded-volume and other segment interactions.
