For polynomials $p$ and $q$ over a common <commutative ring>, their composition is $(p\circ q)(x)=p(q(x))$. It substitutes the whole polynomial $q$ for each occurrence of the indeterminate in $p$, rather than multiplying their coefficient arrays.
