A polynomial factor $g$ of a <polynomial> $f$ satisfies $f=gh$ for another polynomial $h$. Common polynomial factors are cancelled when expressing a <rational function> in reduced form; its <degree of a rational map of the Riemann sphere> is determined after this cancellation.
