For a measurable map $f:X\to Y$, the pushforward of $\mu$ is the measure
$$
(f_*\mu)(B)=\mu(f^{-1}(B)).
$$
It is the distribution induced on $Y$ by mapping points distributed according to $\mu$ through $f$.
