An experimental researcher whose team identified an excited state of <carbon-12> by analyzing <alpha particles> emitted in a nuclear reaction. Their 1953 report measured the level near 7.68 MeV and acknowledged <Fred Hoyle>’s explanation of its astrophysical importance. The state now called the <Hoyle state> is central to understanding how stars form carbon.<The 7.68-Mev state in C12 by David Noel Ferguson Dunbar and others>[Abstract and acknowledgement: magnetic analysis, excitation energy and Hoyle’s interpretation]{ref}
