<R. Nahum> is the first author of a 1995 study of hormone regulation in human <theca cells>. The investigators maintained the cells in serum-free culture and measured <androstenedione> after four days, testing <insulin> and related growth signals with and without <luteinizing hormone>.<Metabolic regulation of androgen production by human thecal cells in vitro by R. Nahum and others>[Abstract: culture design, treatment comparisons and androstenedione assay; Human Reproduction 10, 75–81, 1995]{ref}

Hormone output increased under the tested conditions without a corresponding stimulation of cell growth. That distinction matters when interpreting a culture assay: more product can reflect changed activity of the cells already present, rather than simply a larger population. The experiment identified regulation of androgen production in this cultured system; it did not by itself establish how the same intervention would behave in a whole person.<Metabolic regulation of androgen production by human thecal cells in vitro by R.
