An ideal $I$ is radical when $f^m\in I$ for some positive integer $m$ implies $f\in I$. Over an algebraically closed field, the <Hilbert Nullstellensatz> identifies the vanishing ideal of $V(I)$ with the radical $\sqrt I$.
