<Ranjan Swarup> is a researcher in <plant> development, particularly <auxin> transport and <root (botany)> <gravitropism>. In a 2001 study, <Ranjan Swarup> and collaborators investigated where the <auxin> influx carrier <AUX1> operates in <Arabidopsis thaliana> <root (botany)> tissues. Functional <epitope tag> versions of <AUX1> restored the gravity response of an <AUX1> mutant, allowing the team to localize a carrier that still performed its biological function.<Localization of the auxin permease AUX1 suggests two functionally distinct hormone transport pathways operate in the Arabidopsis root apex by Ranjan Swarup and others>[Author byline and equal-contribution note; Results: functional tagged AUX1; Figure 1]{ref}
A chemical rescue provides an illuminating example. At the same tested concentration, the membrane-permeable <auxin> analogue <naphthaleneacetic acid> (1-NAA) restored the mutant <root (botany)> gravity response and outer-tissue <reporter gene> expression, whereas <2,4-D> did not. Combining the rescue with carrier localization linked the visible bending response to the delivery of an <auxin> signal to growing tissues. The paper proposed distinct inward-to-tip and outward-from-tip transport roles for <AUX1>, showing how the location of a <membrane transport> protein helps explain growth of a whole organ.<Localization of the auxin permease AUX1 suggests two functionally distinct hormone transport pathways operate in the Arabidopsis root apex by Ranjan Swarup and others>[Figure 3: aux1-100 and IAA2::uidA at matched concentrations; Implications]{ref}
