Ray tracing follows the paths along which a slowly modulated wave packet propagates. For a local dispersion relation $\omega=\Omega(\mathbf k;\mathbf x,t)$, the ray velocity is the <group velocity> $\nabla_{\mathbf k}\Omega$.
