For a parallel inviscid base flow $U(z)$ and disturbance streamfunction $\phi(z)e^{i\alpha(x-ct)}$, the Rayleigh equation is
$$
(U-c)(\phi''-\alpha^2\phi)-U''\phi=0.
$$
