An astrophysicist whose research uses absorption features in distant quasar spectra to probe intervening gas. High-resolution measurements constrain physical conditions in early galaxies and can test whether fundamental constants changed over cosmic time. His work also uses atomic fine-structure lines to investigate the evolution of the cosmic microwave background temperature.[ref]
