An isolated <energy> shell gives the <microcanonical ensemble>; a heat bath fixes $T$ for the <canonical ensemble>; a heat and particle reservoir fixes $T,\mu$ for the <grand canonical ensemble>. Constraints determine the allowed fluctuations and which <thermodynamic potential> is useful.
