The residue of a <meromorphic function> $f$ at an <isolated singularity> $a$ is the coefficient of $(z-a)^{-1}$ in its <Laurent series>. At a simple <pole>,
$$
\operatorname{Res}(f,a)=\lim_{z\to a}(z-a)f(z).
$$
