A <covering map> between <Riemannian manifolds> that is a <local isometry>. The metric on the covering manifold is the pullback of the base metric; its <deck transformations> are <isometries>. This local metric agreement makes the <Laplace-Beltrami operator> commute with pullback of smooth functions.
