For a root $\alpha$, its root space is the simultaneous eigenspace
$$
\mathfrak g_\alpha=\{x:[h,x]=\alpha(h)x\text{ for every }h\in\mathfrak t\}
$$
of the <Adjoint representation> of the <Cartan subalgebra>.
