The <Rossby number> compares inertial <acceleration> with <Coriolis acceleration>. For speed $U$, horizontal <length> $L$, and <Coriolis parameter> $f$, it is $\operatorname{Ro}=U/(|f|L)$. Small <Rossby number> supports <geostrophic balance> and the <quasi-geostrophic approximation>.
