<S. McQueen-Mason> is the first author of the 1992 study that isolated wall-extension-promoting <proteins> associated with <expansin> activity. The original paper gives the byline Simon McQueen-Mason. Working with colleagues, <S. McQueen-Mason> extracted material from growing seedling <cell walls> and tested whether it could induce extension in isolated walls.<Two endogenous proteins that induce cell wall extension in plants by S. McQueen-Mason and others>[Original first-page byline and Abstract]{ref}
Separating the extract into active fractions linked the effect to two <proteins>, each able to promote extension without detectable hydrolytic wall breakdown. Reconstitution made the scientific question sharper: a substance associated with growth was tested for its ability to restore a physical wall response.<Two endogenous proteins that induce cell wall extension in plants by S. McQueen-Mason and others>[Abstract: separated activities and isolated-wall assay]{ref}
The distinction between extension and <hydrolysis> is useful beyond this experiment. A wall can change its mechanical behaviour without wholesale digestion of its constituent <polysaccharides>.
