The mass of a canonically normalized <scalar field> is determined by its quadratic fluctuation potential at a stationary vacuum. With several real fields, physical squared masses are the <eigenvalues> of the <scalar mass matrix>. A negative squared mass signals an unstable direction rather than a stable massive particle.
