If extinction scales as $\sigma\propto\lambda^\gamma$, an isothermal hydrostatic atmosphere has $dR_p/d\log\lambda=\gamma H$. The measured continuum slope can therefore estimate atmospheric temperature when gravity and mean molecular mass are known.
